The NBA has done a lot for all of us bro, like it’s …

Jermaine O’Neal: The NBA has done a lot for all of us, man. It’s transcended our families, shaped our kids, and basically defined who we are today. But don’t get it twisted, there’s been some real rough moments too. I’m thinking about my own situation, you know? For nearly 11 straight seasons, I averaged about 2.3 blocks a game. I led the league in total blocks, yet I never earned an All-Defensive Team selection. Three defenses, and I wasn’t on any of them. It’s a reality that still sticks with me. I spent so many nights trying to impact the game with defense, to anchor everything on that end, and not getting that recognition stings. It’s a strange, persistent feeling—to lead in blocks, to make game-changing plays, and still not make the All-Defensive Team. And on top of that, there was the ongoing pressure to contribute offensively every night. It’s a strange paradox—the pride I took in shot-blocking, and the frustration of not earning one of the three All-Defensive spots despite leading the league in blocks. I’ve carried some of that weight with me, and it’s not something you easily move past. I’ve always believed in the value of defense, in making the rhythm of the game harder for opponents, in giving my team a chance to win with stops. It’s a part of my story that I’m still sorting through, even as I look back with pride at what I accomplished on offense and defense alike. The game evolves, but some injustices or unfulfilled aspirations stay with you, and you keep pushing to prove that defense matters and that dedication deserves recognition.
