Many consider Woods the greatest ever because he could play his best golf on the biggest stages. But sometimes the best examples of Woods’ greatness happened behind the scenes. Days before his first Masters win, Woods made Mark O’Meara walk off the course because he was playing so well in their private round. And Butch Harmon said the best round of golf he’s ever seen anyone play happened a week before one of Woods’ most famous major championship wins.Tiger Woods’ private round which was the best Butch Harmon had ever seen Woods set the record for the largest margin of victory at a major championship at the 2000 U.S. Open. He won by 15 strokes at Pebble Beach as the only player to master the conditions on the California coast. This was the most famous victory of the “Tiger Slam,” where Woods won all four majors consecutively. But it wasn’t even his most impressive display of that month. His former coach, Butch Harmon, recently revealed that he played his best-ever round a week earlier.Speaking to Golf Digest, Harmon said, “In 2000, when Tiger Woods won the US Open at Pebble Beach by 15 shots, he was here playing and working on his swing, getting ready to go over to Pebble.“He played, I think, the day before he left, in 30 mph winds with Adam Scott, who wasn’t even in the US Open at that time.“He shot like 63, the best round of golf I have ever seen in my life. And myself and everyone who worked for him, we ran to the casino and put a bet on Tiger Woods to win the US Open and it was like stealing, he won by 15 shots. I’m not gonna say how much we bet, but it was a good bet.”This round, a week before the US Open, showed Woods was ready to take on the blustering winds at Pebble Beach. At 25, he was a master of these conditions, making the world’s best players look like amateurs at this iconic course.READ MORE: Eugenio Chacarra considers withdrawing despite leading the Spanish Open, ‘it’s not good’
