England midfielder Jordan Henderson will not take any further part in the World Cup after breaking his arm following the win over Mexico. The former Liverpool man did not appear for the full 90 minutes at the Azteca, yet he was cautioned and subsequently injured. It was a night to remember for Henderson, who has since undergone surgery on his arm in Kansas City. Wearing a cast, he will be back in support of his teammates in Miami on Saturday for the match against Norway.
Dan Burn, the Newcastle United defender, was first to reach Henderson after the accident. The 34-year-old recounted how he believes he may have contributed to the incident with a moment of misfortune as he jumped over the same advertising board moments earlier without issue.
Thomas Tuchel, watching the incident unfold, recognized immediately that Henderson had suffered a severe injury as footage quickly circulated. Just seconds before Henderson slipped, Burn had jumped over the board with ease. “I think I maybe caused it a little,” Burn told TalkSPORT. “I heard the noise behind us as soon as it happened, and with Hendo, if he doesn’t get up, you know something is wrong. I’m gutted for him. He wasn’t on the pitch, but he was still buzzing for everyone. He’s had his operation now. I’m glad he’s back in Kansas, because it’s been a long few days.”
Henderson, the 36-year-old midfielder who has earned 90 caps for England, may have played his last international match due to the injury. It was a freak accident, but the consequences have been costly for the Brentford man. Despite his pain, Henderson has pledged to continue backing his teammates as they head to Miami to face Norway on Saturday.
