The Detroit Pistons wanted to keep Tobias Harris in free agency, but he ultimately chose to sign with the San Antonio Spurs on a two-year, $31 million deal. In a discussion with HoopsHype, Harris shed light on his decision to leave Detroit for San Antonio, saying the urge to win a championship was a key factor. “The urgency to win a championship,” Harris explained, “felt like both our goals aligned.”
Clearly, Harris believes the Spurs are closer to a championship than the Pistons are. Yet, while he opted for another destination, he leaves Detroit with warm memories of his time as a Piston. “Extreme gratitude to come in here and be a part of the historic rebuild. The friendships and relationships you build, the chemistry we were able to cultivate as a group, and the teamwork we established with players and coaches,” Harris stated. “It was truly remarkable those two years. I had a ton of joy and fun playing the game, so I am grateful for that. You always cherish all those memories that we were able to make happen.”
San Antonio will be Harris’ sixth team, after stints with Milwaukee, Orlando, the Los Angeles Clippers, Philadelphia, and Detroit.
