The LeBron James era with the Los Angeles Lakers appears to be over. On Tuesday, ESPN’s Shams Charania posted on X that “LeBron James will continue his NBA career for the 2026-27 season and has informed the Los Angeles Lakers that the franchise can move on without him because he will play elsewhere, Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul tells ESPN.” Free agency officially begins at 6 p.m. ET today. There will be plenty of interest in the 41-year-old, who remains highly productive, averaging 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 7.2 assists this past season with the Lakers. Here is a look at five potential landing spots for “The King.”
LeBron James to the Cavaliers rumors: Finishing his career with the team that drafted him 23 years ago would be the ultimate Disney ending, and on the court it would make sense. The Cavaliers’ starting lineup currently lacks depth at the small forward position, with Dean Wade used in key games last postseason. A starting five of LeBron, Donovan Mitchell, James Harden, Evan Mobley, and Jarrett Allen would arguably be the best in the NBA. Cavaliers president of basketball operations Koby Altman would need to pull off some serious salary-cap gymnastics to sign LeBron outright, but a reunion between “The King” and “The Land” remains a strong possibility.
LeBron James to the Warriors rumors: This one carries the most momentum right now. ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that the Warriors are planning to pursue LeBron in free agency and could target Anthony Davis via trade, especially since Draymond Green declined his $27.6 million player option. Green, LeBron, and Davis are all represented by Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul. LeBron and Green have long expressed a desire to play together, Davis and LeBron won a title with the Lakers in 2020 and remain friends, and LeBron has praised Stephen Curry while hinting at the possibility of playing with him. Notably, LeBron also played for Warriors head coach Steve Kerr in Team USA’s 2024 Olympic run.
LeBron James to the Spurs rumors: If LeBron truly aims to win one more championship, San Antonio could provide his best chance. The young Spurs are eager for a veteran presence with championship experience, and LeBron would fit well alongside Victor Wembanyama, Stephon Castle, Dylan Harper, and De’Aaron Fox. Financially, San Antonio has its full $15 million non-taxpayer mid-level exception to offer, and LeBron and Spurs president Gregg Popovich have maintained a close relationship over the years.
