TRINITY — It took a while, but eventually Trinity took over. The Bulldogs scored five unanswered goals over the final 33 minutes to break free from rival Wheatmore and won 6-1 in Central Carolina 3A Conference boys soccer Wednesday evening at Wheatmore.“First half I felt like we were just in quicksand,” Trinity coach Nathan Sink said. “We weren’t playing to our potential. We were just walking around out there. We were doing the right things, just not at the right speed.“And the score reflected that — we were lazy. But in the second half we got more into the game, stuff flowed better and we finished strong.”Tony Ontiveros scored two goals for the Bulldogs (9-4 overall, 3-1 CCC), who neared the end of the first run through the conference a loss behind East Davidson with back-to-back matches upcoming against the Golden Eagles.Felix Velasco, Cayden Pugh, Aldo Chaires and Cash Harris each scored a goal, while Justin Garcia chipped in an assist as Trinity won for the sixth time in seven matches — falling only to Providence Grove in its conference opener.“It felt good beating a rival,” said Garcia, a sophomore center midfielder. “And all the goals, celebrations with the boys. It was a physical game, so it was fun — the intensity was high.”Trinity took the lead in the 18th minute on a penalty kick by Ontiveros following a foul in the penalty area and carried a 1-0 lead into the break. But the Warriors answered with a score just after halftime to even the match. And suddenly the Bulldogs, after controlling much of the play to that point, had to make something happen.“We were trying to be individual players at the beginning,” Garcia said. “And then we got a wake-up call with that first goal. So, we started passing like we do, and from there that’s when we started making chances.“Once we scored that second goal, we just didn’t want to stop and kept it going.”Chaires finished on a loose ball in front following a free kick and header in the 48th minute. Ontiveros followed with a run through the defense in the 54th minute, and Velasco scored on a rebound in the 56th minute.Pugh fired in a shot from the middle in the 65th minute, and Harris capped the scoring barrage off a corner kick to the far post in the 67th minute for Trinity — which outshot Wheatmore 24-5 for the match, including 9-2 in the second half.Easton DeWitt scored in the 45th minute for the Warriors (3-10-3, 1-4), who had only a handful of offensive chances — but they included two shots off the goal frame.“First half, we were OK. Second half, we’ll leave it at that,” Wheatmore coach Rick Maness said. “They moved the ball so well. We’re having a hard time defending teams that move the ball so well. Because we ball-watch. And we’re constantly working on it over and over.“And fatigue eventually sets in. And when you don’t have a lot of depth, it adds up. We don’t have the depth that matches up with theirs. They were way stronger than us t
