UK paying Mitch Barnhart $3.2 million in a retirement settlement and giving him a part-time job

Former Athletic Director Mitch Barnhart’s tenure at the University of Kentucky came to a close on June 30, marking the end of an era for the Wildcats. After more than two decades at the helm, Barnhart will exit with a substantial retirement package that underscores his long service to UK and its athletic program. On Thursday, journalist Jon Hale of the Lexington Herald-Leader revealed new details about Barnhart’s retirement arrangements, highlighting a notable financial offering from the university as he transitions away from full-time duties.
According to the report, Kentucky will provide Barnhart with a $3.2 million retirement settlement. Rather than a single lump sum, the funds will be disbursed over several years, with payments scheduled for 2027, 2028, and two installments in 2029. The initial three installments are set at $760,000 apiece, and the final payment will be slightly larger at $780,000. UK has indicated that the entire settlement will be funded from private sources, as stated by university spokesman Jay Blanton.
This arrangement represents roughly a $700,000 reduction from the amount Barnhart was originally anticipated to receive under prior terms. The revised agreement also modifies some of the benefits that often accompany such packages. Specifically, Barnhart’s future benefits—such as complimentary tickets, transportation perks, and the broad array of “bells and whistles” typically associated with long-time athletic directors—will not be included under the new terms.
In addition to the retirement payout, Barnhart will transition into a part-time role at Kentucky, reporting directly to the university president. In this capacity, he will focus on fundraising and perform other duties as assigned by university leadership, according to Hale’s report. Barnhart will receive an annual salary of $40,000 for these responsibilities, and he will continue to be eligible for health insurance benefits. This $40,000 salary is integrated into the overall $3.2 million retirement settlement.
The agreement was finalized on Barnhart’s final day in Lexington, with UK President Eli Capilouto signing off on the arrangement. As Barnhart moves into this part-time role and completes his formal retirement from the day-to-day operations of UK Athletics, the institution aims to honor his lengthy tenure while reconfiguring his relationship with the university’s broader administrative structure. The details of the arrangement reflect a balance between recognizing Barnhart’s contributions and aligning his post-retirement activities with the university’s strategic priorities.
