Valencia showing interest in FC Volendam’s talented young goalkeeper

According to Jeroen Kapteijns, Valencia have shown tangible interest in FC Volendam’s goalkeeper Kayne van Oevelen. The 22-year-old keeper has also attracted attention from FC Twente, but Volendam have made it clear they cannot meet the Dutch club’s asking price, leaving Valencia in a stronger position to pursue a deal. Volendam are reportedly hoping to fetch roughly €2-3 million for van Oevelen, money that would mark the second-largest sale of a player from the club since Micky van der Ven’s €8.5 million move to Wolfsburg.
Valencia’s interest comes despite Volendam’s relegation from the Eredivisie in the previous season. Van Oevelen developed through Volendam’s youth ranks and made his first-team debut during the 2023/2024 campaign. In the 2024/2025 season, he established himself as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper, featuring in 30 matches as Volendam earned promotion back to the Eredivisie. In the following season, he appeared in 33 games, contributing solid performances as the team fought to maintain top-flight status despite the setback of relegation.
Valencia ended the last campaign in ninth place, a far cry from the heights they once reached in Spanish football. At present, Valencia’s goalkeeping options include Stole Dimitrievski of Macedonia and Cristian Rivero from Spain. Dimitrievski, 32, was the primary choice between the sticks for much of last season, with Rivero providing additional depth and competition. The club’s goalkeeping setup thus features a mix of experience and potential, and van Oevelen’s profile as a young, budding stopper could be an attractive long-term investment for Valencia if a deal can be arranged.
The potential transfer would also represent a notable financial milestone for Volendam. With a fee in the €2-3 million range, van Oevelen’s exit would be one of the club’s most significant transfers in recent memory, underscoring the pipeline of Dutch talent moving to bigger clubs in Europe. It would echo the bounce-back narrative Volendam has built around safeguarding promotion and developing players who can step up to higher levels of competition.
For Valencia, securing van Oevelen would align with their broader strategy of refreshing the squad with young, capable Dutch talents who can provide competition and depth at the goalkeeper position. The club’s recent recruitment pattern indicates a willingness to explore cost-effective options with high ceilings, especially as they seek to restore their status within Spanish football and compete more consistently at the top end of La Liga. If a transfer materializes, negotiations will likely hinge on whether Valencia can meet Volendam’s valuation while ensuring the goalkeeper’s development arc remains favorable within a larger, more demanding league.
In summary, Valencia’s pursuit of Kayne van Oevelen reflects a strategic gamble on a young, proven Eredivisie performer with the potential to grow into a reliable first-choice goalkeeper for years to come. Volendam, meanwhile, would stand to benefit from a substantial fee that would reinforce their finances and potentially fund further squad development as they look to maintain a competitive edge in Dutch football.
