I have lived in Houston for most of my life and it is the first NFL game I have attended since the Houston Oilers roamed the plains. More than anything, this felt like a season where the momentum was finally running in the right direction. That came to a crashing halt on Sunday as the Texans perished 27-21 in a disappointing overtime loss. There is a lot to comment on in this one and being in attendance definitely has a different feel than watching on television. You can feel the emotion of the moment and that is one of the things that becomes more acute as we look back on this game. The team is now 0-4 at home this season. You aren’t going to go very far in the playoffs when you can’t win at home. The NumbersTotal Yards: Texans 54/237, Giants 65/420Rushing Yards: Texans 25/84, Giants 34/188Passing Yards: Texans 29/153, Giants 31/232Third Downs: Texans 3/12, Giants 5/13Fourth Downs: Texans 1/1, Giants 2/2Sacks: Texans 3, Giants 1Turnovers: Texans 0, Giants 0Penalties: Texans 10/80, Giants 4/50Time of Possession: Texans 26:45, Giants 35:50Obviously, some of these numbers are skewed as the Giants went 81 yards on three plays in overtme. Take those yards and points away and the defensive effort looks different. That’s obviousl rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic, but context matters when we are looking at numbers and it will matter when we take a look at the good, bad, and ugly. The GoodThere wasn’t a whole lot to write home about, but one feel good story came to fruition on Sunday. Tank Dell made his return after nearly two calendar years on the shelf. Officially, the stat line shows he had only one catch and one carry. He also had a promising punt return as well. He made it through the game healthy and contributed to the cause. If they can count on him for one game changing play a game that will be a win for the remainder of the season. Welcome back Tank and we are hoping to see a lot more from you this season.TheBadAs we were walking out of the game I asked my wife which of these she would put first. We ended up agreeing. I mentioned the numbers above because I am giving the defense the relative pass by considering them as just bad and not ugly. Yes, the Giants seemed to run it at will at certain times during the game, but you left regulation giving up only 21 points and it had to be deflating to see your offense go three and out to start the overtime period. It was a proverbial double whammy for this defense. You were asked to play an extra quarter and that was after being on the field for the majority of regulation. The Texans offense had more three and outs in today’s game since they have had in the Indianapolis game.
