Victor Wembanyama hints he may take less than full max to help Spurs build roster

Victor Wembanyama is poised to be extension-eligible this offseason, and he appears to be the quintessential no-brainer candidate for a maximum contract. After the Spurs’ heartbreaking Finals loss to the New York Knicks, a club that could evolve into a title contender—especially given Jalen Brunson’s substantial commitment, accepting a discount on the max contract he could have pursued (roughly $113 million below the max)—one wonders if Wembanyama is thinking along similar lines. There’s chatter that an extension agreement may already be in the works, suggesting Wembanyama could be willing to take less than the full max. That notion was echoed by Jake Fischer of The Stein Line, who heard rumors circulating during Summer League in Las Vegas.
As the reigning unanimous Defensive Player of the Year, Wembanyama would be eligible for a Rose Rule 30% max contract, a figure projected to begin around $53.5 million and potentially exceed $300 million over the five-year deal. The Spurs are keenly aware of the financial realities and the looming tax implications for a team with a growing payroll. Wembanyama will be extension-eligible this summer, with the extension potentially kicking in for the 2027-28 season. Following him, Stephon Castle would be eligible for his extension next summer, and Dylan Harper would enter that process the year after. This sequence would unfold while De’Aaron Fox’s four-year, $221.7 million extension elevates next season’s financial landscape.
Any discount Wembanyama is willing to embrace would help the Spurs maintain a young, cohesive core that has already reached the NBA Finals together, preserving long-term continuity. Wembanyama’s drive to win is well known, but it’s important to temper expectations: star players in the NBA aren’t typically inclined to take discounts to help owners save on taxes, and such moves rarely become widespread trends. Still, the possibility of a smaller max or an enhanced pathway to long-term flexibility could shape how the Spurs build around their franchise centerpiece. This dynamic underscores how strategic extensions, roster planning, and tax considerations intersect as San Antonio navigates a period of significant financial and competitive decisions.
