Washington F to Suit Up For Americas Qualifiers with Future Uncertain

By admin — In News — July 12, 2026

Wini Silva of Braga has emerged as a promising talent for Brazil’s men’s basketball squad in the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 Americas Qualifiers. The 6-foot-9 forward recently earned FIBA’s inaugural Rising Star award after averaging 8.0 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 1.0 block per game across three group-stage contests. Over that stretch, Silva logged a total of 41 minutes against Chile, Colombia, and Venezuela, recording a pair of double-digit performances.
At 21 years old, Silva has spent the last two seasons with Minas in the Novo Basquete Brasil (NBB), Brazil’s top professional league. In a February matchup with Venezuela, he posted a career-best line of 14 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 blocks, a performance that drew the attention of several college programs. Among those tracking him was Washington Huskies coach Danny Sprinkle and associate head coach Andy Hill, who saw his potential for their program.
In early May, Silva committed to the University of Washington, becoming the first of three international players slated to join Sprinkle’s squad for the 2026-27 season. However, Silva’s arrival in Seattle has not yet occurred, as has not yet begun for Croatian forward Boris Tisma, while Australian guard Tristan Devers started practicing with the Huskies last month.
Around the time of Silva’s verbal pledge to the Huskies, the NCAA adopted significantly different rules governing international players who have previously played professionally at any level. Silva has earned compensation above the minimum salary while playing for Minas over multiple seasons, a contrast to Devers, who signed a developmental contract with the Brisbane Bullets. This distinction could be a factor in why Silva’s transition process has moved more slowly.
Minas also features another young, promising talent in Uruguayan guard Lucas Rodríguez, who is in a similar situation to Silva. The Brazilian club has not publicly commented on either case. It is anticipated that Silva’s situation could undergo at least one more development before mid-August, if not sooner.
This report originally appeared on Huskies Wire, with the headline noting that Washington Fenders would suit up for Americas Qualifiers while the future remained uncertain. The piece emphasizes the evolving landscape for international players navigating NCAA eligibility and professional compensation rules as they pursue opportunities in the United States.
