What happened to USA? How American World Cup dream unraveled vs. Belgium

SEATTLE — The atmosphere was electric, drums pounding as red, white and blue smoke swirled through the streets. Decibels rose as “Enter Sandman,” “Free Bird,” and “Take Me Home, Country Roads” pumped up the patriotism, turning Seattle’s Monday, July 6 into a sprawling celebration from Pike Place Market to Lumen Field. Supporters of the United States men’s national team arrived ready for the next step in its soccer evolution, whether lifelong fans or late adopters, all-in on the renewed American dream of World Cup glory unfolding right at home.
But that dream quickly shifted into a nightmare that a nation could not escape. “Today wasn’t a good day,” midfielder Tyler Adams admitted. What seemed imminent became a reality check as Belgium loomed as the obstacle for millions who imagined the U.S. could rise to soccer stardom by eliminating the host nation in the round of 16 with a commanding 4-1 victory.
There, before kickoff, officials and players lined up for the World Cup 2026 Round of 16 clash at Seattle Stadium on July 6, 2026. It took just 120 seconds for Belgium to press the American defense, prompting a palpable shift in mood—an “oh, this is serious” moment. Seven minutes later, Charles De Ketelaere showed the U.S. defense to be pedestrian, as the Red Devils toyed with the home team and snatched the life from the stadium.
“We started poorly,” said coach Mauricio Pochettino. The energy swung as Belgium struck first; thousands were stunned. It’s common for a home team to concede first and avoid immediate upheaval, but this felt different. Belgium dominated tactically from the start, as if the defense had been sacked thrice in a row, the running back bulldozing the star linebacker, and the quarterback finding a target all too easily.
The U.S. finally found a spark when Malik Tillman buried a free kick to equalize at 1-1, restoring hope and reviving the crowd’s optimism. But the moment was brief—just 61 seconds later, De Ketelaere and Belgium reclaimed the lead, draining the life from the field once again. The remainder of the match devolved into a struggle as the U.S. and its fans searched for a shred of momentum and a path forward in a night that underscored the gap between aspiration and outcome.
