SC Freiburg and Switzerland youngster Johan Manzambi is nearing a move to Newcastle United, with multiple outlets reporting that the clubs have settled on a deal valued at around €60 million for the 20-year-old. If the transfer proceeds as planned, Manzambi would sign a long-term contract after the World Cup.
Manzambi first caught the eye on the international stage during the tournament, where a knee injury sidelined him just before Switzerland’ s round-of-16 penalty shootout victory over Colombia. Before his injury, he had impressed with three goals and two assists in four appearances, underscoring the promise that had already marked his career.
The 20-year-old’s World Cup performances did not come out of the blue. Since joining Freiburg from Servette’s youth academy in January 2023, he has established himself as a key player for the Bundesliga club. Florian Först, a scouting expert for the German football site Kickfieber.de, has tracked Manzambi’s progression for years and speaks highly of the midfielder’s potential.
“His rise to senior football was anticipated, and his Bundesliga debut at 18 came as no surprise,” Först told Bulinews.com. “The Swiss youngster shone even at such an early stage of his career; Newcastle fans can expect a real gem of a midfielder.”
Först describes Manzambi as a versatile midfielder, primarily a box-to-box presence with a high work rate and a strong physical profile. “In the Bundesliga, his runs were sometimes feared; his power, close ball control, agility, and ability to break through tackles helped him cover vast distances. He was one of the top players in his position last season in terms of progressive runs,” Först notes, adding that Manzambi has also excelled in attacking facets.
“His clean passing stood out, featuring highly intelligent deliveries to teammates. He always keeps his head up and rarely misses a teammate in a better position. His excellent movement in and around the penalty area, combined with the finishing ability he recently demonstrated at the World Cup, makes him a constant threat from range as well,” Först explains. He also highlights Manzambi’s defensive contribution, pointing out that the 20-year-old won more than 290 duels last season and generally emerged successful in one-on-one challenges.
While Manzambi shows strengths across multiple facets, Först believes there is room for improvement in several areas. “Although his general passing is reliable and his progressive runs are excellent, there is certainly work to be done on his progressive passing game,” he says. This is a facet where Manzambi could become an even more complete player. He also mentions the need to refine his defensive positioning to elevate his overall game.
In summary, Manzambi’s profile combines physicality, technique, and forward-driving intent, qualities that have attracted interest from one of Europe’s biggest clubs. If the transfer to Newcastle United is finalized, the 20-year-old could embark on a new chapter that leverages his multi-faceted skill set, with potential further development highlighted by analysts like Först.
