What the World Cup Means to Erling Haaland’s Tiny Hometown

MIAMI — Norway is riding a historic surge at the World Cup. Returning to the tournament after a 28-year absence, the Scandinavians will take on England in their first-ever World Cup quarterfinal on Saturday in Miami. Fans have followed the team across the Atlantic in large numbers, carrying their distinctive Viking row chant into the U.S. alongside them.
Leading the squad is a modern-day Viking in Erling Haaland. The 6-foot-4 Manchester City forward has scored seven of Norway’s 12 goals this summer, just one behind Golden Boot leaders Kylian Mbappé and Lionel Messi. Beyond his prolific scoring, Haaland has become a global sensation, adored by American fans for his blunt social media persona and his striking presence on the field.
Haaland’s roots trace back to Leeds, England, where he was born in 2000 to elite Norwegian heptathlete Gry Marita Braut and Alf-Inge Haaland, who played for Leeds United in the Premier League. When Erling was three, the family returned to his parents’ hometown of Bryne in Time, a roughly 13,000-person municipality in southwest Norway. The farming community, renowned for its toughness and work ethic, sits about six miles inland from the coast, where wind, rain, and cows are common features of daily life.
The future star developed through Bryne Fotballklubb’s youth system before moving to Molde in 2017 at age 16. Alf Ingve Berntsen, Haaland’s coach for eight years at Bryne, explains that Haaland’s father allowed him to grow independently at the youth level and never interfered with his development. Norway’s youth sports system is highly regarded for prioritizing participation in local clubs and multi-sport participation over early results, a philosophy that helped shape Haaland’s foundation.
As a teenager, Berntsen played a pivotal role in guiding the young star. He recalls, “Let the home audience see this guy because soon we’re going to lose him.” He believed Haaland was strong both tactically and technically, and even if he seemed slight at the time, Berntsen sensed the potential for a dramatic physical transformation in the years ahead, thanks to Haaland’s family background and genetic makeup.
After a day’s play had ended, Bryne Fotballklubb plans to celebrate Haaland’s ascent with a watch party at its stadium. At 11 p.m. local time on Saturday—just after sunset—the club will host around 3,000 fans to watch the world’s stage unfold for the player who began his journey in their own backyard. Andreas Vollsund, who has served as both mayor of Time and Haaland’s schoolteacher, expressed unbridled pride to Front Office Sports: “We are so extremely proud of him.”
Haaland’s personality has stolen the spotlight at the World Cup, as he has captured the imagination of a new generation of fans—adding roughly 20 million Instagram followers to his already vast audience. His embrace of a country western aesthetic, appetite for raw milk, and bold social media presence have endeared him to fans who relish his candid, larger-than-life persona. Berntsen notes that Haaland remains very much the same person he was as a boy, underscoring that the environment around him—supportive, grounded, and rooted in a strong sense of identity—has helped him thrive on this stage.
