Why Adidas Trionda ball will not be used again at the 2026 FIFA World Cup

The quarterfinals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup have concluded, and the stage is set for a pair of thrilling semifinals: France versus Spain, and Argentina against England. For the first time in World Cup history, the four teams remaining—ranked at the very top of the global standings—will contest the semifinals, ensuring a high-stakes clash among the sport’s elite nations.
To elevate the occasion, Adidas has introduced a notable change to the tournament’s official match ball for the latter rounds. The original Trionda will no longer be used for the remaining games of the tournament. Instead, a new Trionda Final ball will be employed during the last four matches: the semifinals, the third-place playoff, and the World Cup Final. According to FOX Sports, this marks a historic first for FIFA: Adidas has deployed a completely distinct final ball design, rather than merely updating the color scheme of the primary ball used through the earlier stages of the competition.
The design of the new ball emphasizes a striking color palette of gold, black, and white, drawing inspiration from the FIFA World Cup trophy itself. Despite this bold aesthetic, the ball will maintain the same fundamental performance characteristics relied upon throughout the tournament. It continues to feature the four-panel construction that players are accustomed to, along with the embedded technology designed to support the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system in making pivotal on-field decisions. In other words, while the look changes for the decisive matches, the ball’s core performance and technological framework remain consistent with what audiences have come to expect during the World Cup.
This development comes as fans anticipate the semifinals and the ultimate pursuit of the World Cup trophy. The on-field action promises to deliver the intensity and drama befitting a tournament of this caliber, with the world’s best teams and players squaring off in pursuit of immortality in the sport. As the new Trionda Final ball makes its debut on the world stage, it adds another layer of novelty to an already historic edition of the tournament, underscoring Adidas’ willingness to innovate for the sport’s most meaningful games.
