Why Omarion Miller’s breakout game for ASU could come against former team

Towards the end of practice on Nov. 3, right after Arizona State senior wide receiver Omarion Miller finished talking to local reporters, there was a fun moment between Miller and his teammate, senior safety Adrian “Boogie” Wilson. Wilson is one of the more lively characters on the roster, and this moment was an example of that.Pretending to be a reporter himself, Wilson began to ask Miller questions ahead of this weekend’s home game against Colorado on Nov. 7. The first one was in jest, with Wilson asking, ‘Who is your favorite teammate?’ Miller responded, ‘Probably Boogie Wilson.’ Then Wilson got into the meat of his questions.“‘What’re you most excited for playing your former team?’”Miller responded quickly.“‘To beat ‘em real bad.’”The answer was short but came with conviction. Miller is set to go against the same team he suited up for from 2023 to 2025. While Miller did his best not to provide Colorado with bulletin board material, it’s only natural to feel more pressure going against your former team.“You’re going to feel something, right?” coach Kenny Dillingham said. “People are going to take that and potentially twist that. They twist everything. But you can’t say no. But you can’t say yes. Every person is going to handle things different. “I know he’s been the same guy this week for us, same attitude, same everything. You wouldn’t know the difference. But there has to be something in your head, right? That’s human nature.”Miller still has a bunch of friends that he keeps in contact with in Boulder, but not for this week. It’s a place where Miller saw himself grow up, maturing into a leader for younger players in his time with the Buffaloes.“Man, I ain’t gonna lie, this week I’m pretty excited going against my old team,” Miller said. “A lot of emotions going on right now, for sure. I played there for three years, going against my former team; those were my guys. Anxious to get on the field and ball.”And ball he might. It’s been an up-and-down season for Miller, who started off with eight receptions for 102 yards and one touchdown in the season opener — but that was against lower-level competition, FCS Morgan State. Miller, a priority target in the transfer portal for ASU, recorded five receptions for 85 yards and one touchdown against Baylor, although that came in a 55-19 blowout loss, one of the worst of the Dillingham era.Miller just broke a three-game spell without a touchdown by hauling in a 20-yard score to cut the lead to 17-10 against BYU on Oct. 31. The senior wide receiver feels like he’s on the verge of a breakout game — “Most definitely,” he said with a smile — and so do his coaches.“It’s close,” Dillingham said. “Last week there were multiple opportunities that (if) one of those balls is caught, that’s his breakout game. There it is, just one of those four or five other opportunities. It’s going to happen. It’s just a matter of when, because we’re all
