The size of a hockey net is finite, so putting a big body in front of it to keep pucks out makes some geometric sense. That might be the thinking for the Minnesota Wild as they look to their future in goal, as evidenced by the three-year entry-level contract they signed with hulking goaltender Filip Ruzicka on Tuesday. The Czech national stands 6 feet 8 before he puts skates on, and he was picked by the Wild in the fifth round of last month’s NHL draft.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisement“That was the best day of my life, so far. I was so happy and excited to be a part of this organization, to be in Minnesota,” Ruzicka said late last month while attending Development Camp at TRIA Rink in St. Paul. After cutting his hockey teeth in Europe, Ruzicka switched to the Canadian major junior league last season. While adjusting to the North American game, he logged 42 games for the Brandon (Manitoba) Wheat Kings, going 26-14-1 with a 3.19 goals-against average and a .906 saves percentage. He revealed that the biggest adjustment was experiencing the bitter cold of the western Canada prairie, after arriving there wearing Birkenstocks and no socks.Ruzicka, 18, admitted that his size helps with his effectiveness in goal, as his body naturally takes up more space, leaving shooters fewer options. He plans to play another season in Brandon before likely entering the Wild’s minor league system a year from now.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisement Myers: Blockbusters and bargains as NHL salary cap rises Wild prospect Charlie Stramel has sights set on staying home Wild sign Daemon Hunt to one-year deal Net loss of personality for Wild with Middleton and Zuccarello gone New Wild defenseman Olli Määttä brings Stanley Cup experience
