“World-class footballer” Manager heaps praise on Arsenal man

Mikel Merino is building a reputation as one of world football’s most effective players after coming off the bench to score in each of his last two appearances for Spain at the World Cup. The midfielder arrived at the tournament having recovered from a serious injury, a setback that restricted him to substitute appearances throughout the competition. As the tournament has moved into its final stages, his playing time has become even more limited.
Despite those constraints, Merino has continued to make a decisive impact whenever used. His contributions have proven crucial for Spain as they pursue World Cup glory. In the round of 16 against Portugal, Merino came on to score the lone goal, and he replicated the feat in the quarter-final versus Belgium, once again scoring the winning goal as a substitute. Across those two matches, Merino has logged fewer than ten minutes of regulation time but has nonetheless delivered two key goals, underscoring his ability to influence important games despite limited opportunities.
There had been criticism of Spain’s decision to include him in the World Cup squad given his fitness issues, but his performances have helped justify that choice and demonstrated his value to the national team. Spain’s manager, Luis de la Fuente, spoke highly of Merino’s influence and quality. According to Metro, he said: “Mikel has many virtues, he’s a world-class footballer who could play for any national team, any club, just like he does for a top team. And with us, he’s perfectly suited to this idea, this system. We’re lucky to have him and other players. With Mikel, we know he’s always there when we need him.”
Merino’s displays have reinforced his importance to Spain despite limited minutes. His ability to deliver a decisive contribution from the bench provides Spain with an additional weapon as they continue their World Cup campaign, while also strengthening the confidence his manager has placed in him throughout the tournament.
