While there has been plenty of chatter about WWE Hall of Famer Sheamus potentially jumping to AEW this summer, that move would not be in his best interest. The “Celtic Warrior” would likely be better served by taking his talents to New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW). This month marks the end of an era in WWE. After 17 years with the company, reports indicate that Sheamus’ contract is nearing its expiration and talks on a new deal have stalled. He himself signaled the possible goodbye to WWE fans with what looked like a farewell post on X.
Following news of his impending departure, speculation immediately turned to a surprise jump to AEW. Yet, as per a fresh report from Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio, an internal division exists within AEW about signing the 48-year-old superstar. Some former WWE colleagues would welcome his arrival, while others worry that bringing in Sheamus could squeeze already limited TV time for current talent.
While moving to AEW might seem like a logical next step, it may not be optimal for either Sheamus or AEW. If he truly wants to maximize the final chapters of his career, contemplating a run in Japan with NJPW could be the smarter play.
NJPW is currently navigating a challenging period, with much of the strain tied to AEW’s growth drawing talent away from the Japanese promotion since its 2019 launch. The company has already lost top stars like Kenny Omega, the Young Bucks, Kazuchika Okada, Jay White, David Finlay, Will Ospreay, and Konosuke Takeshita, while legends such as Hiroshi Tanahashi and Tetsuya Naito have stepped away, and other valuable roster members have moved on. In this moment, NJPW is fighting for its survival and could badly use a marquee signing to rekindle interest. Bringing in an established name like Sheamus could provide the boost they need and help reassert NJPW’s presence on the global stage.
The Irishman is a proven commodity who has spent much of the last two decades headlining the world’s premier promotion, and his résumé is nothing short of impressive. He could draw significant attention to NJPW and potentially become the next gaijin megastar they’ve sought since the Chris Jericho era. Beyond his star power, Sheamus’ wrestling style aligns well with NJPW’s ethos. In recent years, he has emerged as one of WWE’s most reliable mat generals, delivering crowd-pleasing, physically intense matches. While he remains in excellent shape for a man approaching 50, AEW’s in-ring tempo can sometimes feel four-quarters faster than his current style. In Japan’s strong-style framework, however, he could thrive and feel right at home, delivering hard-hitting bouts that highlight his strengths.
Whether NJPW can meet Sheamus’ financial expectations remains uncertain, and travel costs and logistics would factor into such a decision. Still, if the aim is to maximize the remaining prime years of his career, NJPW offers a compelling path that could extend his longevity while reinvigorating a brand hungry for a headline act. As the wrestling world watches closely, a Sheamus-NJPW collaboration would not only be a notable transfer but also a strategic move that could reshape the landscape for both parties in the years to come.
