​CHICAGO — A lot of Yankees fans are probably thinking that general manager Brian Cashman’s one and only trade-deadline accomplishment so far was giving often-struggling reliever Camilo Doval a one-way ticket to Pittsburgh on Saturday.That’s not entirely true.The two-prospect return from the Pirates includes Omar Alfonzo, a Double-A catcher who will be easy to root for. The reason doesn’t have anything to do with the fact that he was Pittsburgh’s No. 14 prospect in MLB Pipeline rankings or that he comes from a family that has past and present big-league catchers.Alfonzo, 22, is a native of Venezuela who lost his mother and teenage sister in a series of deadly earthquakes that struck his country on June 24.Patricia de Alfonzo, 50, and Eliana Alfonzo, 16, were last seen alive at a hotel in La Guaira, Venezuela. The hotel was completely destroyed by a June 24 earthquake.Their bodies were found on July 5, the same day Eliezer Aflonzo Jr., 26, made his major league debut, starting at catcher for the Dodgers.Eliezer Alfonzo Sr., also a catcher, was a .240 hitter who played in 193 MLB games over five seasons with the Giants (2006-08), Padres (2009), Mariners (2010) and Rockies (2011).When Omar Alfonzo’s mother and sister were declared missing on June 24, he immediately took a leave of absence that lasted until July 31. He agreed to speak publicly about the tragedy on Aug. 12, but the Double-A Altoona Curve news conference won’t happen now because of the trade.Alfonzo, 22, is hitting .238 with nine homers and 35 RBI across 62 games, 60 with Altoona and one each in rehab games at the rookie level and Low-A.Read the original article on NJ.com.
