There are several questions about what the Washington Commanders will look like on offense in 2026, starting with new offensive coordinator David Blough and extending to the running game. The team has made some backfield changes this offseason, and it’s worth reviewing which running backs did and did not return.
Which running backs did not return? Chris Rodriguez had the second-most carries on the 2025 squad with 112 and rushed for 500 yards, consistently showing a high success rate in both 2024 and 2025. Despite this, the Commanders allowed Rodriguez to hit the market, and he signed a favorable deal with the Jaguars that he could not pass up. Austin Ekeler tore his Achilles in the second game, contributing just 14 carries and five receptions before his injury, and remains unsigned after becoming an unrestricted free agent on March 11.
Which running backs are returning from 2025? Jacory Croskey-Merritt, known as “Bill,” is back for his second season after a promising rookie year. In 2025, he led the team with 175 carries, totaled 805 rushing yards, notched eight rushing touchdowns, registered 41 rushing first downs, posted a longest rush of 72 yards, and averaged 47.4 rushing yards per game. He will need to improve as a receiver and in pass protection in 2026. Jeremy McNichols, who will turn 31 in December, showed value as a receiver out of the backfield last season with 25 receptions and solid blocking. He also contributes on special teams and has been effective on coverage, including a notable 60-yard rushing play against the Raiders.
Which running backs have been added to the offseason roster? Rachaad White is seen as a dynamic runner who can catch and gain yards after the catch but may not be the primary option for frequent carries inside. Jerome Ford, who played the first four NFL seasons with Cleveland after being drafted in the fifth round (156th overall) in 2022, brings inside-running ability at 5-10, 210 pounds and will compete for a roster spot. Kaytron Allen, selected 187th in the 2026 draft’s sixth round, was Penn State’s all-time leading rusher. Robert Henry, an undrafted free agent from UTSA at 5’9″, 196 pounds, has drawn comparisons to former Washington back Jaret Patterson; the team might consider keeping him for the practice squad in 2026.
