A pivotal offseason for the Los Angeles Lakers is starting to take shape as the league-wide deadline for contract option decisions looms on Monday, June 29, with free agency opening the next day. Rob Pelinka and the Lakers front office have been linked to a wide range of potential targets as they seek upgrades on the wing and in the frontcourt, all while questions linger about the futures of LeBron James, Rui Hachimura, and Marcus Smart.
One new name entering the photo as a potential target is Ziaire Williams, the former Brooklyn Nets forward whose $6.25 million team option was declined. Williams is entering unrestricted free agency at 24 years old and is expected to attract interest from several teams. The Athletic’s Dan Woike reported that the Lakers could be among them, noting that the team wants to get younger and more athletic on the wing. Williams, who is 6-9 with a nearly 40-inch vertical leap, averaged more than 10 points in back-to-back seasons with Brooklyn and shot over 34 percent from three, suggesting he could become a disruptive defender with upside on offense. The Lakers reportedly already have some internal enthusiasm for him, while Brooklyn’s decision to move on was described as primarily due to a roster crunch.
In 56 games last season, Williams posted averages of 10.2 points, 2.4 rebounds, 1.1 assists, and 1.4 steals, with shooting splits of 42.5 percent from the field and 34.3 percent from three. He also shot 85.0 percent from the free-throw line while logging 22.9 minutes per game, setting career highs in several categories. He fits the Lakers’ offseason blueprint as a young, athletic wing they are widely expected to pursue. If James leaves, the Lakers’ path to building around Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves would accelerate, with athletic wings and a rim-running center typically shaping successful Dončić-centric teams—a role Williams could fill as a valuable upside piece at a reasonable cost.
Lakers Nation’s Trevor Lane highlighted Williams’ success against Los Angeles last season, noting he averaged 16.5 points on 52 percent shooting, 40 percent from three, plus two steals in that matchup, the best scoring average Williams posted against any team he faced more than once that season. Additionally, Williams shares a West Coast connection with the Lakers, having been high-school teammates with Bronny James at Sierra Canyon, a link that could add to the appeal of Los Angeles as a destination.
