Five things to know before the 47th annual Muncie Ironman 70.3

The longest-running 70.3 triathlon in North America is returning to Muncie this week, with the 47th annual Ironman 70.3 Muncie scheduled for Saturday, July 11. This event features a total distance of 70.3 miles, comprising a 1.2-mile swim, a 56-mile bike ride, and a 13.1-mile run, which together earn the race its Half Ironman designation. Since its inception in 1980 as the Muncie Endurathon, this year marks the 16th time Muncie has hosted a race under the Ironman 70.3 banner.
Last year, the event drew more than 700 participants and attracted hundreds of spectators from 44 states and 12 countries. As thousands gather for Ironman weekend in Muncie, here are five essential details to know. The triathlon’s swim takes place in the Prairie Creek Reservoir, while the bike route winds through rural Delaware and Henry counties on closed state highways, and the run course circles the southern side of the reservoir with rolling hills before returning to the finish line at the reservoir.
The race is set to begin at 6:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 11, with parking opening at 4 a.m. at Prairie Creek. An information tent, a lost-and-found tent, an official Ironman store, and a medal engraving station will be available from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and an awards ceremony is slated for 3:30 p.m. This year’s registration is closed to new participants, but athletes must check in, collect timing chips, and participate in an athlete briefing before the start. Check-in and related briefings are being held at the Horizon Convention Center, located at 401 S. High St. in Muncie, on Thursday, July 9, and Friday, July 10.
On Thursday, July 9, check-in runs from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m., with athlete briefings at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. On Friday, July 10, check-in is from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with briefings at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. A mandatory bike check-in at Prairie Creek Reservoir is scheduled for Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. After the race, athletes may visit the post-race nutrition area, open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and there will be a mandatory bike and gear check-out following the finish. For spectators and athletes alike, note that South 560 E Road and Gates Road on the east side of the Reservoir will be closed during the bike portion of the event to ensure safety and smooth flow.
