​There are some critics who feel the Los Angeles Lakers overpaid for guard Quentin Grimes when they gave him a four-year, $60 million contract this month in free agency. But he is a player who could play a very key role for the team this coming season.He is known as a two-way wing who can be a complementary scorer while also being a plus defender. Per Dan Woike of The Athletic, it looks like the 26-year-old will play the role of a point-of-attack defender on the defensive end.Grimes went on ESPN LA radio recently and sounded like he was ready to take on that challenge (h/t Lakers Nation).“Yeah, taking on that challenge being a point-of-attack defender that I am, have been for four or five years in the NBA,” Grimes said. “Thibs (Tom Thibodeau) did a great job with me in New York, teaching me the ropes of how to be a pro and giving me that challenge early on in my career. In New York, my first year, second year, taking on the role of guarding all the best players. So, being that here and JJ (Redick) already talked about it, just being in elite shape, elite conditioning, to take on that challenge every night. And that’s why I’ll be super prepared and super ready to take on that challenge every night.”In five NBA seasons, Grimes has a career average of 11.1 points in 25.6 minutes a game while shooting 36.6% from 3-point range. The Lakers have lacked capable perimeter defenders over the last few years, and it looks like they’re counting on him to at least partially fill that void.They will also need him to provide some offensive support alongside Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves.
