The Buffalo Bills won a thrilling overtime shootout against the Los Angeles Rams, 37-34, on Monday Night Football in Week 5. Or, more accurately, the Rams lost to the Bills in overtime after Sean McVay passed on a chance to win the game in regulation. Buffalo took a 34-27 lead with 1:39 remaining in the fourth quarter, leaving way too much time on the clock for Matthew Stafford to drive down the field to score a touchdown with five seconds left in regulation. Rather than let an offense that had scored on three straight drives go for two and win the game with their best unit, McVay chose to kick and go to overtime. It almost worked out for the Rams, but Bills’ linebacker Greg Rousseau was able to block what would have been a game-winning field goal by Rams’ kicker Harrison Mevis in overtime. Bills get the ball back with four minutes to go. https://t.co/O4b39gPykX— TSN (@TSN_Sports) October 13, 2026Mevis was 0-for-2 on field goal attempts in the game. He missed one of his two attempts last week against the Eagles and is now 3-for-6 on kicks over 40 yards this season after making 6-of-7 during his rookie year. McVay not letting the reigning MVP and an offense that was absolutely rolling go for the win is execusable. The Rams came into the game with the worst special teams unit in the entire league. Two missed field goals and a 70-yard return on the opening kickoff are not going to help.MORE: Sean McVay was so fired up jumping for joy following Rams’ big comeback winThe Rams are 32nd in DVOA in Special Teams this season (again) because that’s how McVay builds his team. Just doesn’t take it seriously.
And then they basically take the ball out of Stafford’s hands to set up a kicker who already missed tonight from a similar distance— Gregg Rosenthal (@greggrosenthal) October 13, 2026Kicking the extra point at the end of regulation was old school, coward’s football and it cost the Rams a win. That’s a big deal when they play in one of the best divisions in football and already threw a game away because McVay messed up how they traveled to a game. He jokes about his mistakes after wins, but has no time for questions after a loss. He’s a good coach who has won a Super Bowl, but he’s still giving fans a reason to question him on a pretty regular basis this season.— Enjoy free coverage of the top news & trending stories with The Big Lead Newsletter —
