Another member of the Miami Dolphins’ perfect-season Super Bowl team has died.Defensive tackle Bob Heinz died of natural causes on Oct. 31 in Fresno, Cal. He was 79.Yahoo Sports first reported the news and his son, John, confirmed his father’s death. The Dolphins put out a statement on Tuesday, saying “We are saddened to learn of the passing of former Dolphins defensive tackle Bob Heinz … Bob was a member of the 1972 Perfect Team, a two-time Super Bowl champion and a key part of Miami’s legendary No-Name Defense. We extend our deepest sympathies to his family, loved ones and former teammates.”While not as well known as others on the famous “No Name Defense” such as Nick Buoniconti, Manny Fernandez and Jake Scott, Heinz helped anchor a defensive line – along with fellow tackle Fernandez and ends Bill Stanfill and Vern Den Herder – that was part of a unit ranked first in yards and points allowed and third in rushing yards permitted. Those Dolphins were 17-0 in 1972 and won back-to-back Super Bowls. Heinz played eight seasons for Miami, which selected him in the second round (37th overall) in the 1969 NFL/AFL Draft out of Pacific, and one season for Washington. He played 109 games, starting 55, in Miami, recording nine sacks and one fumble recovery. But the sack number is misleading because sacks did not become an official NFL stat until 1982.Heinz retired after the 1978 season and later became an advertising executive in Palo Alto, Cal. While pretty much keeping a low profile after his exit from the NFL, Heinz made headlines in 2015 when he sold his Super Bowl VIII championship ring to an investor, who later sold it for $68,040.Born in Milwaukee on July 25, 1947, Robert Kenneth Heinz moved with his family to Stockton, Cal., while in high school. He played college football at San Joaquin Delta College as well as Pacific. He was inducted into the University of the Pacific Hall of Fame during the 1987-1988 academic year.He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Carol; three children, Julie, Joe, and John; and two grandchildren.1972 Miami Dolphins remain NFL’s only unbeaten championThe NFL’s last unbeaten team fell on Sunday. The Detroit Lions defeated the Minnesota Vikings 19-15 — meaning the 1972 Dolphins will remain the league’s only undefeated champion. This article originally appeared on Palm Beach Post: Bob Heinz, member of 1972 Perfect Miami Dolphins, dead at 79
