The Wisconsin Badgers made their first big change last weekend against Iowa, taking out quarterback Colton Joseph after Joseph tallied a 35.7% completion rate for 90 yards. ESPN’s QBR scored Joseph at 16.9. The Old Dominion transfer added another six yards on the ground across seven attempts. Luke Fickell made the change with seconds to go in the third quarter, and the Badgers were already down by 30. Replacing Joseph was Ryan Hopkins. Hopkins came from the prestigious Mater Dei High School as a three-star prospect, having committed to the Badgers back on April 13, 2025.In Hopkins’ limited time, the freshman notched 93 yards through a 61.5% completion rate, along with one interception. Quarterback changes can often signal a change of leadership under center. Fickell was adamant against that notion earlier this week, according to WSJ’s Colton Bartholomew.Fickell full quote here: https://t.co/upcQdup1PBpic.twitter.com/YHHbQv8NAy— Colten Bartholomew (@CBartWSJ) November 2, 2026Joseph’s season stats include 1,346 yards, 11 touchdowns, and five interceptions on a 55.6% completion rate. The Old Dominion transfer adds another 371 yards and four touchdowns as well. While there is no reason to doubt Fickell’s quarterback comments, if Joseph’s football continues to be subpar, then there may be a need for a change.
