Diaby's absence will give Walker and Bain opportunities

YaYa Diaby’s absence is a setback for a Buccaneers defense finally finding its rhythm, but it also creates an opportunity for two young pass rushers to take on more responsibility. With Diaby expected to miss a few weeks after an MCL sprain against Atlanta, David Walker and Rueben Bain Jr. are positioned to take on bigger roles during an important stretch of Tampa Bay’s season. The timing is not ideal. Diaby just delivered his best performance of the season against Carolina, recording three sacks, and was starting to generate the pressure Tampa Bay needed from its edge group. Through eight games, he has six tackles for loss, six quarterback hits, and three sacks. Replacing that production will not be easy, but the Buccaneers have options. Walker has arguably earned the opportunity. After missing his entire rookie season while recovering from a torn ACL, the 2024 fourth-round pick has made the most of his return. He leads Tampa Bay with four sacks and has added 22 tackles and six tackles for loss. He also played 25 defensive snaps against Atlanta, second among the Buccaneers’ outside linebackers behind Bain. Walker has shown he can be more than a rotational option, and Diaby’s injury gives him an extended stretch to prove it.Bain’s role is also worth watching. The first-round pick has been steadily working into Tampa Bay’s defensive plans, and his performance against Atlanta offered an encouraging glimpse of what he can bring. He led the outside linebacker group with 35 snaps and pressured Michael Penix Jr., contributing to two interceptions. The Buccaneers need Walker, Bain, Al-Quadin Muhammad and Anthony Nelson to collectively handle the additional workload Diaby leaves behind. Walker has earned more consistent snaps, while Bain can keep developing with opportunities to make an impact in both the pass rush and run defense. Tampa Bay is entering a critical stretch with a chance to climb back into the NFC South race. The defense has allowed just 13 points over its last two games, and maintaining that momentum will require contributions beyond the starting lineup. Diaby’s injury creates a challenge, but it also gives Walker and Bain an opportunity to show how much this edge group can offer. This article originally appeared on Bucs Wire: Diaby’s absence will give Walker and Bain opportunities
