Hall of Fame center fielder Carlos Beltrán could be a front-runner for the Mets’ managerial vacancy. The Mets missed the postseason after signing Juan Soto before last season, and rather than rebounding this year, they have slid further. After a 34-37 start, they dismissed manager Carlos Mendoza and elevated Andy Green to interim manager. Finding a new skipper will not be easy. New York is a demanding market, and with whispers of a possible salary cap looming, the appeal of a front office that spends big may be fading. Regardless, the Mets need a new manager to get them back on track, and one of their former players may fit the bill.
According to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, the Mets would love to hire Alex Cora as their next manager, but Cora is expected to join the Phillies after declining their offer to replace Rob Thomson, who was fired on April 28. The Phillies instead turned to Don Mattingly. Hall of Famer Carlos Beltrán is viewed as the favorite for the Mets’ vacancy when interim manager Andy Green returns to the front office this winter.

Beltrán was inducted into the Hall of Fame this year. He spent most of his 20-year playing career with the Mets and currently serves as a special assistant in the front office. He was hired as the Mets’ manager before the 2020 season but stepped down before managing a game. Beltrán also served as Puerto Rico’s general manager for the 2026 World Baseball Classic. The Mets plan to retire his number in September, and he could soon be named their next manager. Nightengale notes Beltrán is the favorite, and his existing role within the organization could boost his odds.
