Nets find first win in familiar place, ride second-half surge past Pacers

Apparently, the Brooklyn Nets know where to go when they need their first win.Nearly a year after ending a 0-7 start on this same Gainbridge Fieldhouse floor, the Nets returned Sunday still searching for their first victory of another season. And once again, the Indiana Pacers were standing in their way.The circumstances were familiar. So was the outcome.Behind a strong second half from Nolan Traoré, timely shooting from Julius Randle and their best center production of the young season, the Nets defeated an injury-depleted Pacers team 98-90, snapping their five-game losing streak. It wasn’t pretty. But for a team desperate to experience something other than defeat, it was enough.Michael Porter Jr., who scored 32 points in last season’s breakthrough against Indiana, led Brooklyn with 23 points and nine rebounds Sunday. Randle added 20 points, six assists and four 3-pointers, while Traoré finished with 16 points and six assists. The Nets (1-5) needed every bit of that production.Neither team could establish much offensive rhythm before halftime. Brooklyn shot just 38.5% from the field through two quarters, yet still carried a 43-40 advantage into the break because Indiana was even worse. The Pacers, playing without Tyrese Haliburton, Ivica Zubac, T.J. McConnell and Obi Toppin, shot 32.4% in the opening half. Their offensive struggles were glaring, but the Nets weren’t exactly making them pay. That changed after halftime, largely because of Traoré.The second-year guard entered the break with just two points on 1-for-6 shooting, struggling to create against Indiana’s physical defense. But he found his rhythm in the third quarter, scoring eight points as Brooklyn built its first double-digit second-half lead of the season.Traoré finished with 14 second-half points and four 3-pointers, including two crucial makes in the final five minutes that helped keep Indiana at arm’s length.Still, the Nets couldn’t completely shake the Pacers.Brooklyn’s lead reached 12 in the third quarter, but Indiana continued hanging around, eventually pulling within 75-72 early in the fourth. Randle answered with a 3-pointer out of a timeout, one of three he made after halftime, to restore some breathing room.Another Randle three and consecutive triples from Traoré later helped Brooklyn preserve its advantage.Day’Ron Sharpe also delivered his strongest performance of the season, finishing with 15 points, 13 rebounds and four assists for his 20th career double-double. Moritz Wagner finished with 14 points and six rebounds off the bench, giving Brooklyn’s centers a combined 29 points and 19 rebounds.Andrew Nembhard led Indiana with 23 points, including 15 in the fourth quarter. Pascal Siakam added 17, but the Pacers nine missed free throws proved costly.Brooklyn shot just 41.1% and committed 18 turnovers. Keon Ellis and Terance Mann went scoreless, and the Nets still have plenty to address before Monday’s matchup with the Knicks at Madison Square Garden. But
