Spire Parked Carson Hocevar for the Homestead Finale After NASCAR Fined Him $100,000 and Docked 25 Points

Spire Motorsports suspended Carson Hocevar from Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series championship race at Homestead-Miami Speedway, and NASCAR separately fined him $100,000 and docked him 25 driver points for what its penalty report calls multiple violations of Section 4.4a of the rule book. Both announcements came Tuesday, and both trace to Sunday’s Chase race at Martinsville Speedway. The suspension belongs to the team, not the sanctioning body. NASCAR’s published account treats Spire’s decision and its own penalties as two separate actions. Justin Haley will drive the No. 77 Chevrolet at Homestead, according to Spire. Hocevar is scheduled to speak to reporters at the track Friday at 2:30 p.m. ET.What the data showedNASCAR says SMT data showed Hocevar brake-checking in front of Austin Cindric’s No. 2 Team Penske Ford multiple times at Martinsville. The contact in Stage 2 crushed the nose of Cindric’s car and ended his race with a 36th-place finish. Hocevar also spun alone on Lap 198 while William Byron was putting him a lap down, which brought out a caution.Austin Cindric’s No. 2 Team Penske Ford at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Oct. 3, 2026 (file photo, not from Martinsville). He responded on his Instagram story, a post NASCAR.com embedded without quoting, so we are not characterizing it here.Same points, different finesJosh Berry drew the same 25-point deduction for brake-checking Ryan Blaney on Lap 253, but his fine was $50,000. Blaney’s car took heavy front-end damage before it spun in Turn 1 and caused a caution. Penske has a technical alliance with Wood Brothers Racing, which fields Berry’s No. 21 Ford, and Sunday is Berry’s last race in it before he moves to Legacy Motor Club for 2027.Elton Sawyer, NASCAR’s senior vice president of competition, said the gap in the fines came from Hocevar’s history and that officials had already spoken with him about earlier behavioral penalties. The report doesn’t list them. He described the problem with both drivers as using the front of the car “as an antic or a strategy to basically ruin other drivers’ days.”Two earlier items on our own record involve Hocevar, and neither is a brake-check. NASCAR fined him $50,000 at Kansas last October for spinning his tires to rejoin a race with safety workers around his car. Last month it fined Zane Smith $50,000 for hitting Hocevar after Phoenix, citing a July meeting with both drivers.Spire’s statementSpire co-owner Jeff Dickerson said in the team’s statement that Spire could have left the matter to NASCAR, and that the decision was about respect rather than money or points. The statement says Hocevar’s conduct at Martinsville fell short of the standard Spire sets, that the team still supports him, and that it is looking ahead to Daytona in February. It says nothing about his contract, his sponsors on the No. 77, or what a missed race costs the team.Justin Haley at Sonom
