​A potential offseason idea was floated for the New Orleans Pelicans on Wednesday, and it’s at least worth exploring because it could be something worth considering.Los Angeles Lakers insider Dan Woike floated big man Karlo Matkovic as a potential Lakers target this offseason, as they need center depth. While the Pelicans haven’t been keen on trading Matkovic, they are not in a place where they have to consider moving an end-of-bench guy if it helps them elsewhere.Matkovic is a fan-favorite and can completely take over games with his burst of energy off the bench. He’s a developing player who has never really had a huge leash, but he can fly high and shoot the three-ball. All of that, on top of the fact that New Orleans always has to pay him $2.3 million next year, means that they certainly don’t have to move him and would probably be better off keeping him.Still, here are some of the things that the Lakers could offer in return:Small Draft CapitalThis is probably what Los Angeles would prefer. On paper, a 26-win team that hasn’t made any moves would probably be interested in flipping expiring players for draft capital. The Pelicans are not a normal team right now. They want to compete next year. The two second-round picks that Matkovic would get them don’t help that.It goes back to the Murphy situation. Teams want to give them two first-round picks for him. That is not a return to scoff at, but New Orleans isn’t interested. They would need it to be an overkill offer to accept just picks. That goes for Matkovic as well, even if they aren’t asking for three firsts.Player Swap: SG Dalton Knecht or SG Jaden HardyIf the Pelicans either feel comfortable with the current frontcourt group minus Matkovic, or especially if they add another center, then they would be more open to a swap than just picks. They need players who can fill in the holes on their roster. The Bennedict Mathurin rumors show they want another two-guard/wing who can score the ball. Knecht and Hardy are two options that Los Angeles could easily part ways with.Knecht came out strong would a solid scoring profile as a rookie, around 80th percentile efficiency, but took a big step back last season. A change of scenery could potentially unlock the three-point threat that he looked like he could be.Hardy was a volatile prospect coming out of the draft and fell to the second round, but people did like his scoring potential. He has never really broken out, but is a solid shooter. Last season, he shot 39.7% on 4.6 threes per night over 15.8 minutes per game. New Orleans would have killed to have that last year.
