The best thing that you can say about the Atlanta Falcons’ quarterback room is that there’s a lot of room for improvement. Tua Tagovailoa’s preseason debut last week was a dud, Cooper Rush was atrocious, Michael Penix is still sidelined for now and undrafted rookie Jack Strand was their best performer against a tough Denver Broncos defense. If the results on the field didn’t speak for themselves, you can also see it in black and white in ESPN’s annual positional rankings from Mike Clay. He has the Falcons ranked 30th at the game’s most-important position, but does at least mention them as the unit to watch at this spot.”Outside of Cleveland, the only QB battle around is between Michael Penix Jr. and Tua Tagovailoa. The No. 8 overall pick in 2024, Penix has yet to emerge as a capable starter. He has totaled 14 touchdown passes in 14 games, and he had a league-low 23.1% off-target rate before his ACL tear in Week 11 of last season. Meanwhile, Tagovailoa has flashed at times during his career, but Miami took on a record $99.2 million in dead money to move on from him after a disappointing 2025 season.”At least the Falcons are plenty-talented at several other important positions. Here’s where they stand at each spot according to Clay’s rankings.Quarterback: 30thRunning back: 4thWide receiver: 13thTight end: 10thOffensive line: 12thInterior defensive line: 24thEdge rusher: 31st*Linebacker: 21stCornerback: 27thSafety: 5thOverall: 26th*With no Jalon Walker for the year and no James Pearce for eight games, this is probably a fair ranking for the Falcons’ edge rotation going into the regular season – even after adding Za’Darius Smith. The cornerback ranking feels a bit harsh, especially with rookie Avieon Terrell potentially replacing the unit’s weak link in Mike Hughes. The wide receiver group ranking 13th is surprisingly high given the lack of proven options behind Drake London, but there is at least potential further down the depth chart.Even if they’re getting underrated at every single other spot, it’s not going to matter much unless the quarterback room proves Clay wrong. This article originally appeared on Falcons Wire: Where the Falcons stand at each position by ESPN rankings
