Wimbledon to ‘discourage’ top golfers from using phones to watch WC

Golf stars Rory McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood will be among the VIPs in Wimbledon’s Royal Box who will be asked not to watch England’s World Cup match on their phones during play. Fleetwood, an Everton fan, will have to avoid watching his club’s goalkeeper Jordan Pickford in England’s game against DR Congo on Wednesday after All England Club chief executive Sally Bolton said Wimbledon will discourage stars from using their phones in the Royal Box. Play on Centre Court is set to clash with the 5 pm (1600 GMT) kickoff, and with Wimbledon confirming the football will not be shown on any screens, fans must choose between the championships and the World Cup. While guests are not barred from watching on their phones, Royal Box attendees face stricter guidelines. Bolton explained: “We’re not going to be showing the football on any of the big screens around the grounds, but clearly if people have got their phones, we’re not going to prevent people from watching the football. We do discourage people in the Royal Box from using their phones anyway.” Several golfing stars in the Royal Box on Wednesday are known football fans, with Justin Rose backing Chelsea and Luke Donald a Spurs supporter. The athletes were greeted warmly by fans as they arrived at the Royal Box entrance on Wednesday morning, where crowds gathered to see them pose for photos outside Centre Court. McIlroy, wearing the green jacket he earned as this year’s Masters champion, joined Rose, Fleetwood, and Donald, along with Italy’s Edoardo Molinari and Denmark’s Thomas Bjorn, to wave to cheering spectators. Centre Court will later host the second rounds of both the ladies’ and gentlemen’s singles, with Novak Djokovic and Jannik Sinner among the afternoon’s featured clashes.
