Michigan Football Recruiting: Kyle Whittingham is proving skeptics wrong

Ann Arbor, Michigan — January 2, 2026 — New Michigan head football coach Kyle Whittingham is proving to be a stronger recruiter than many expected. Whittingham, who had spent his entire coaching career in the Pacific Time Zone and had never lived in Michigan or built relationships within the state’s high school circles, faced questions about whether he could compete for top national recruits in the Big Ten. It’s early, but his start has been promising: Michigan sits in the Top 10 nationally in the recruiting rankings after securing a fourth four-star defensive back, Monsanna Torbert, who chose the Wolverines over Ohio State.
What stands out most is the speed and decisiveness of Michigan’s recruiting push under Whittingham. The staff reeled in four commits in four consecutive days from May 13-16: four-star wide receiver Quentin Burrell, four-star defensive lineman Xavier Muhammad, three-star safety Charles Woodson Jr., and four-star running back Tyson Robinson. This rapid-fire sequence signals a staff that identifies top targets early, builds relationships quickly, and secures commitments before other programs have a chance to respond. This is a departure from the reputation of previous Michigan staffs, particularly under Jim Harbaugh, who often had recruits linger on the board for extended periods and sometimes ended up with commitments from lower-ranked players who didn’t always translate into on-field impact.
Whittingham’s approach is, in essence, an urgent, closing-to-commitment philosophy. An example is four-star tight end Colt Lumpris, who publicly flipped from Alabama to Michigan after a low-key unofficial visit to Ann Arbor the same weekend he made his decision. Despite not needing to travel to Michigan that weekend, Lumpris’ visit underscored the coaching staff’s ability to create momentum and influence recruits’ decisions rapidly.
